For generations, Kumagai Kajiya, based in Ofunato along the southern coast of Iwate,
has specialized in crafting traditional harvesting hooks used primarily for abalone fishing.

During abalone harvesting, hooks are repeatedly struck against rugged coastal rocks,
requiring exceptional strength and durability at the tip.

Even with a tip as fine as a toothpick,
Kumagai Kajiya’s hooks are forged to resist bending and breaking against stone.

Their form is also carefully refined,
with precise curves and angles shaped around the needs of the fishermen who use them.

By applying the craftsmanship developed through hook-making,
Kumagai Kajiya has continued to create fishing tools that support fishermen
across Tohoku and throughout Japan.

Tools Shaped by Craftsmanship and Innovation

Since 1994, Kumagai Kajiya has applied its fishing tool craftsmanship
to the creation of gardening tools designed for demanding fieldwork.

Our weeding sickles have earned strong support from users
for their ability to remove stubborn weeds from the roots.

One of our signature tools, the “Kusatori Kagi Kama,”
created from the ideas of Suzuo Kumagai,
has grown into a bestseller with annual sales exceeding 30,000 units.

We have also developed tools such as the “Mizo Cutter,”
designed to clear weeds growing in narrow grooves,
and the “Grass Rake,” which allows users to work while standing comfortably.

Through practical ideas shaped by craftsmanship,
Kumagai Kajiya has become known locally as an inventor of useful tools,
and in 2016 received the Ofunato City Distinguished Service Award.
